Museum Assistant

Position Summary

The Newberry Museum is looking to hire a part-time Museum Assistant, to support the Executive Director in areas such as administration, visitor services, marketing, collections work and exhibit design, and facilities maintenance. We are looking for someone who has excellent oral and written communication skills, enjoys working with people, and can help fulfill the museum’s important mission to protect, preserve, present, and promote the ongoing history and heritage of Newberry County and College.

Hours and Pay Scale

This role is for 20 hours a week, at $16 an hour. Applicants must be willing to work Saturdays, as well as evening hours for special receptions as needed.

Position Responsibilities

The Museum Assistant’s work will be split into five categories, with tasks associated with each category. A list of job categories and examples of related tasks is as follows:

  • Administrative

Help to coordinate volunteer program and recruit new volunteers; help open and close the museum and serve as supervising staff as needed when Executive Director is absent; assist with organizing meetings and manage museum calendar

  • Visitor Services

Fill gaps in front desk volunteer schedule by serving as receptionist as needed; help scheduling field trips and museum tours as needed

  • Marketing and Social Media

Help schedule regular posts for museum Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts; aid in publication of marketing materials for museum exhibits and special events

  • Collections and Exhibits

Be a driving force behind execution, design, and facilitation of exhibits; help Executive Director and Exhibit Committee install and de-install exhibits

  • Facilities

Assist Executive Director in performing preventative building maintenance, keeping track of warranties, and helping to alleviate facilities-related issues as they arise

Qualified Candidates will have

A Bachelor’s degree and 2+ years of relevant experience

Proficient computer skills (MS Office, Wix, social media proficient); IT knowledge preferred

Strong interpersonal skills with ability to interact with all levels

An upbeat, can-do attitude that is mission-oriented

A detail-oriented, self-motivated approach to work

Proven time-management skills (punctuality, multitasking, meeting deadlines)
