The SCFM Annual Conference is a time where we can celebrate the impact that museums have made on the state of South Carolina. It’s a time where we can share our successes, learn from our challenges, and grow as museum professionals. We look forward to this year's conference September 10-12, 2025 in Belton, SC. This year's theme is Stronger Together: Museums in A Changing World

A great conference requires great sessions! We rely on you representing a variety of experiences, backgrounds and expertise to craft engaging, informative, and relevant sessions for our annual conference. We encourage a wide range of proposals from individuals at any career-level from any size and type of museum and cultural organization. We want to hear from you! Consider submitting a proposal today!

CRAFTING A PROPOSAL

Session ideas can originate from a variety of inspirations -- your experiences, questions you want to discuss, topics you've heard elsewhere, institutional achievements and current innovations. While you must be well-versed in your chosen topic, you do not have to be an expert to organize a session. Brainstorm with colleagues and reach out to NEW peers and partners to develop a clear path forward. The best sessions present varied perspectives that allow attendees to further their professional development, provide ideas translatable to their home institutions or that inspire change and growth. Be innovative and creative!

Session Format(Required)

Please read the following format descriptions carefully, and select the most appropriate session format for your proposal.

Hands-On Presentations: Hands-on presentations are designed to engage participants in teaching activities, interactive discussions, and more.

Roundtable Discussions: Roundtable discussions emphasize spirited discussion about a central question led by the presenter(s) and engaging session attendees. Presenters briefly introduce the baseline idea or question they wish to explore and then open the discussion to exchange ideas.

Panel Discussions: Panel discussions are sessions presenting different perspectives on a topic or question. Proposals must include a moderator and a minimum of three panelists representing different organizations, ideas, or experiences. To enhance the richness of discussion, criteria for selecting panel discussions include the diversity of presenters and viewpoints.

Traditional Presentations: Traditional presentations focus on a single topic or program, typically including a talk or PowerPoint (or other media) presentation followed by questions and answers or a short discussion.

The strongest proposals carefully address the criteria listed below and provide enough detail for reviewers to fully understand what the session will entail.

Proposals will be assessed and selected by how well they:

  • Describe in detail what will occur in the session.
  • Explain why the session is appropriate for the selected format and, for hands-on presentations, what specific steps you will take to engage the audience.
  • Describe how the session will effectively engage the audience in innovative thinking about new or proven ideas and approaches.
  • Raise important questions or deliver positive, solution-oriented outcomes supported by research and/or program evaluation.
  • Explain how the session will inform museum professionals about proven practices, push the leading edge of the profession, and/or motivate the pursuit of excellence.
Session Objectives(Required)

Please include three (3) learning objectives written in response to the phrase: "At the conclusion of this session, participants will be better able to: _______."

Learning objectives will be published with your presentation title and description, and the objectives will be used by the Program Selection Committee to determine a proposal’s merit in the selection process.
